samenvatting: In Queer African Cinemas, Lindsey B. Green-Simms examines films produced by and about queer Africans in the first two decades of the twenty-first century in an environment of increasing antiqueer violence, efforts to criminalize homosexuality, and other state-sanctioned homophobia. Green-Simms argues that these films not only record the fear, anxiety, and vulnerability many queer Africans experience; they highlight how queer African cinematic practices contribute to imagining new hopes and possibilities. Examining globally circulating international art films as well as popular melodramas made for local audiences, Green-Simms emphasizes that in these films queer resistance - contrary to traditional narratives about resistance that center overt and heroic struggle - is often practiced from a position of vulnerability. By reading queer films alongside discussions about censorship and audiences, Green-Simms renders queer African cinema as a rich visual archive that documents the difficulty of queer existence as well as the potentials for queer life-building and survival.

samenvatting: As studies investigating mainstream entertainment media in the 21st century suggest, queer characters have lately been included more often. However, some research and LGBTQIA+ organisations report that, while the overall number of portrayals of queer characters has increased, using queer media tropes has proliferated too. To attest these claims, a quantitative content analysis of popular movies produced in the West and released in 2015-2016 and 2020-2021 was conducted. Based on the cultivation theory, parasocial contact hypothesis, as well as a minority media representation analysis, the frequency of featuring queer characters and using queer tropes were investigated. The results showed that lately queer characters have not appeared in movies more often, neither has the frequency of using queer tropes proliferated. Potential reasons, explanations, and the current study's limitations are discussed.

samenvatting: An element of drama has always attended Rupert Everett, even before he swept to fame with his outstanding performance in 'Another Country'. He has spent his life surrounded by extraordinary people, and witnessed extraordinary events. He was in Moscow during the fall of communism; in Berlin the night the wall came down; and in downtown Manhattan on September 11th. By the age of 17 he was friends with Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger, and since then he has been up close and personal with some of the most famous women in the world: Julia Roberts, Madonna, Sharon Stone and Donatella Versace. Whether sweeping the floor for the Royal Shakespeare Company or co- starring with Faye Dunaway and an orang-utan in 'Dunstan Checks In' (they both took ages to get ready), Rupert Everett always brings as much energy and talent to his life as he does to his career. His memoir swoops from the eccentricities of the British upper classes to the madness of Hollywood, from the Russian steppes to an Easter egg hunt in Elizabeth Taylor's garden.

Queer Representation in Disney's Recent Feature-Length Films: A Visual Discourse Analysis  / Tessa van Westerop.

samenvatting: This research investigates and decodes Disney's representation of queerness in four of its recent animated and live-action films, namely Cruella (2021), Jungle Cruise (2021), Lightyear (2022) and Strange World (2022). It uses queer theory, imagology, and stereotypical tropes (twelve in total, divided into seven categories) to conduct a qualitative visual discourse analysis and close viewing of the films. It aimed to conclude how Disney represents queerness in its recent feature-length films but found that there is no one way of describing Disney's queer representation in its recent films. It did, however, observe some patterns. Most notably, it found that Disney is no longer using queer characters as its villains in any of their recent films, which is a significant change from their older films. Moreover, it found that there is a noticeable difference between Disney's animated films and its live-action films. The animated films portray a more fluid and inclusive image of queerness by including, for example, non-white queer characters and not making use of rigid stereotypes. These portrayals, however, do often border on a sense of tokenism, and leave the queer characters relatively one-dimensional. The live-action films, on the other hand, make more use of the stereotypical tropes, which results in a more rigid, limited and often subservient representation of queerness. However, on the other hand, these representations also touch upon some more 'realistic' aspects of queerness, and the characters' queerness often influences their storylines.

From Queer-O to Hero ; Queer-Coding and the Lovable Villain in Disney Films  / Manon I. Dol.

samenvatting: Currently on their 8th "first openly gay character", Disney has a long history with queer-baiting, adding queer subtext to characters and relationships to attract queer viewers, but what they are even more known for is queer-coding. Queer-coding, a practice where characters are given stereotypical queer mannerisms and expressions without being able to freely state they are queer, is seen as inherently problematic for the queer community and society's view of queer people. Especially since Disney attributes these characteristics mainly to the villains in its children?s films. This association of villainy with queer stereotypes could potentially lead to (internalized) homophobic tendencies and a feeling of "otherness" for queer children. Building on scholarship examining the psychological impact of films on children, this thesis will analyze the portrayal of the queer-coded villain of Disney's The Lion King (1994) and compare it to the portrayal of contemporary beloved villains such as Marvel's Loki. Through this comparison, the question of whether the queer-coding of villains has played a role in the increased popularity of villains, who are now often the main characters in films, will be tackled. Is it the case that contemporary lovable film villains have retained and are built on homophobic stereotypes from the past, bending these stereotypes in such a way that audiences are attracted to them?
